Britain will fall short of 40 trade deals promised to have been delivered by the time it’s scheduled to leave the European Union in March, according to a leaked document.
International trade minister Liam Fox faces embarrassment at having signed just six promise letters for trade deals with European partners.
Mr Fox promised that he could roll over 40 existing EU trade deals by March 29, when the UK leaves the EU.
Just a handful of letters have been exchanged between trade minister Liam Fox and other countries.
Britain penned an agreement with Switzerland on Monday, while it has Chile, the Southern and Eastern African bloc tied up. Deals with Israel and the Palestinian Authority are “on track”.
The document, leaked by The Sun newspaper, reveals that discussions with 19 countries are significantly off-track, including Egypt, Morocco and Jordan.
Preliminary-agreements for major deals with South Korea and Canada, two economic heavyweights, won’t be completed by the end of March.
"We're not going to get many of the deals over the line in time now," a minister told The Sun newspaper.
“What we hope to have instead is letters of understanding with all the remaining countries, which will go some way to reassuring business.”
The National asked Britain's trade department for comment.
UAE Minister of Economy Sultan Al Mansouri earlier this week said he was approached by the UK for a free trade deal.
Mr Al Mansouri said it could take years to reach an agreement.
Neither the UK trade department or the UAE provided any detail about what the deal could look like.
In his speech at the beginning on February, Mr Fox said the UK should pivot to “new and established partnerships”, in particular China and India.
Mr Fox, like many Brexiteers, believe the UK should establish free trade deals. Brexit would see the UK fall out of existing trade deals negotiated by the EU, including the EU-Japan deal dubbed the world's biggest free trade zone.

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.
How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.

The trek described here started from Jomson, but there are many other start and end point variations depending on how you tailor your trek. To get to Jomson from Kathmandu you must first fly to the lake-side resort town of Pokhara with either Buddha Air (www.buddhaair.com) or Yeti Airlines (www.yetiairlines.com). The trek
Restricted area permits (US$500 per person) are required for trekking in the Upper Mustang area. The challenging Meso Kanto pass between Tilcho Lake and Jomson should not be attempted by those without a lot of mountain experience and a good support team.
