Strong earthquake rocks Indonesia

Buildings rattled but no immediate damage as Indonesia recovers from another, more powerful earthquake that left more than 1,000 people dead.

A strong earthquake has rattled buildings in Indonesia's capital. A Meteorology and Geophysics Agency official said the epicentre was about 300 kilometres south-west of the capital, Jakarta, in the Sunda Strait. It had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4. Suhardjono, who like many Indonesian goes by a single name, said there were no immediate reports of damage "but it could have caused damage in areas close to the epicentre." He said the quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami.

Indonesia is still recovering from another, more powerful earthquake that left more than 1,000 people dead in western Sumatra earlier this month. * AP
