MAZAR-I-SHARIF, AFGHANISTAN // An Afghan prisoner murdered his wife during a conjugal visit, allegedly because she had been unfaithful after he was jailed for killing her relatives, police said today.
Din Mohammed was sentenced to 20 years in prison two years ago for killing his mother-in-law, and his wife's brother and sister in the northern province of Samangan.
Mohammed's wife, whose name has not been released, visited him in jail in the provincial capital Aybak on Monday and was found dead in a small private room used for inmates to see their wives, police said.
Mohammed confessed to her murder, the Samangan police chief, Ikram Nikzad, said.
"Mohammed was told by his mother that his wife had affairs," he said. "When she came to visit him in jail he strangled her with her veil and killed her. They were meeting in a private prison room."
Mohammed's mother has been detained for questioning, Mr Nikzad said.
According to a UN report last month, Afghanistan has made progress in protecting women against violence, but many still suffer horrific abuse. Afghan women still endure killings by relatives in the name of family honour, forced marriages and domestic abuses.
There are fears that legal protection and other gains made by women will be eroded after Nato and the United States withdraw most of their 100,000 troops by the end of 2014.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion
The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".
The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.
He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.
"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.
As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
