CAIRO // Two road accidents killed 16 people and injured 22 south of the Egyptian capital, according to authorities.
The first accident involved a head-on coalition between a car and a microbus filled with passengers on the desert highway connecting Cairo with the southern provinces, the official Middle East News Agency reported.
The report said 11 people were killed, including the drivers of the car and the microbus in the southern province of Minya. The 21 injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The second incident claimed the lives of five people and injured one when the car overturned on the highway connecting the ancient monument cities of Luxor and Awsan, said Gen. Mansour el-Shenawi, the Luxor police chief.
Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws. An estimated 6,000 people die annually in such accidents.
