CAIRO // An Egyptian judge has ordered the release of two Al Jazeera English journalists, demanding that the Canadian defendant pay a $33,000 bail, pending their retrial.
The judge ordered the release of all defendants at the retrial’s opening Thursday. The fiance of Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy cheered in jubilation: “Long Live Justice.”
The court proceedings come less than two weeks after the deportation of the reporters’ Australian colleague, Peter Greste, who was held with Mr Fahmy and Egyptian Al Jazeera producer Baher Mohammed. The three initially were sentenced to at least seven years before a retrial was ordered.
