ABU DHABI // Education in South Yemen received a boost on Monday as a number of schools and government buildings were reopened in Aden.

Projects funded by the Emirates Red Crescent to the tune of Dh3 million led to the restoration of a number of the education authority’s buildings and a number of schools in the Yemeni southern governorate of Lahej.

Waddah Al Halimi, Governor of Lahej, thanked the UAE for extending its support after it suffered widespread destruction in the current conflict, UAE state news agency WAM reported.

The Emirates Red Crescent has supported the region in the form of food aid, medication, medical devices, ambulances and infrastructure.

Since April 2015, the UAE has provided Dh7.3 billion in aid to Yemen targeting about 10 million Yemenis, including four million children.

This includes building power plants, developing the transport sector, and funding the Yemeni public budget to cover payment of government employee salaries.
