DUBAI // A man who was sentenced to nine months in prison for knocking a policeman to the ground and choking him will now serve only six.

The Vietnamese man, 38, was stopped by police on October 30 last year as part of a routine inspection of workers on the Palm Jumeirah.

He handed an ID to the officer then ran away.

“I checked the ID and saw it belonged to a different person,” the officer said. “He immediately started running and I chased him.

“When I caught up with him, he kicked me and I fell down. Then he strangled me.”

A colleague came to his aid and pulled the worker off the officer.

“I grabbed him from the back and pushed him away from my colleague then called for back up,” said the colleague, 47.

The Vietnamese man, who told officers he ran away because he had overstayed his work visa, was convicted by Dubai Criminal Court of using someone else’s ID and assaulting a police officer.

Dubai Court of Appeal reduced his sentence to six months. He will be deported after completing his prison term.
