DUBAI // A worker stole cash from his company, fled the country and then returned under another passport and name, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Wednesday.
Prosecutors said that Sri Lankan S W, 38, stole Dh3,600 from Oxygen Life trading company on June 2 last year and left the next morning.
A S, who worked for the company, said she called the defendant on the morning of June 3 after arriving at the office at 8.45am.
“He didn’t pick up and I looked for him in the offices but he wasn’t there. I got suspicious and checked my drawer, where I kept the cash, and found it missing,” said the woman whose nationality and age were not given.
She also noticed that the Sri Lankan’s passport was missing from her manager’s drawer. There were no signs of a break-in and she was the only one with a key for the office but she gave it to the defendant when she went on leave, she added.
“The manager had given me the cash so I can pay bills and other costs,” said A S, adding that the defendant was always complaining about his salary.
Prosecutors told the court that the Sri Lankan returned to the country months after the incident using a new name and passport. They also offered footage showing the defendant as he entered the manager’s office, opened a drawer and then picked up something before going out of shot.
He denied a theft charge in court. A verdict is expected on December 30.
