DUBAI // A worker was killed when he was crushed under the weight of a crane 15 floors off the ground, Dubai Police said.
“He went to work the day after the storm on Friday, and he found that one of the cranes had moved because of the winds and was stuck to a crane next to it,” said Maj Khaled Ibrahim Al Hammadi, of the Transport and Rescue Department. “So he climbed to where the cranes connected and tried to cut them apart but the crane was heavy and put too much pressure on his body, which resulted in his immediate death.”
Brig Al Hammadi said rescue units rushed to the scene and worked carefully to extract the man’s body.
“We had to be very careful because we were worried that the two cranes will fall and result in a disaster,” he said. “We cleared the area completely and called engineers and experts to share their expertise. They confirmed that any movement will result in a part of the crane falling.”
Two other cranes were brought in to help stabilise the two stuck together, after which authorities were able to control the situation and remove the body.
On Friday, strong winds toppled a crane over Sheikh Zayed Road, injuring at least one person, damaging a hotel and several vehicles.
