DUBAI // A 32-year-old woman who was sentenced to six months in jail for molesting and robbing a man in a lift must see-out her prison term the Court of Appeal has ruled.

Unemployed Jordanian S S flirted with Iranian G T, 45, in order to distract him while she stole his wallet, prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court at a hearing in April.

On December 16 last year, G T was parked on Khalid bin Al Waleed Street in Bur Dubai when S S knocked on his car’s window and asked him to help her move some items from a nearby flat.

“I went with her and walked towards a nearby building then took the lift,” said G T. “She pressed for the third floor and as the door closed she suddenly hugged me, kissed me on the cheeks and touched me while saying that her husband did not love or satisfy her and that she needed men in her life.”

He pushed her away and got out of the lift when it reached its floor.

“I returned to my car and, shortly after, noticed I no longer had my wallet that contained US$1,100 (Dh4,040) and Dh6,400. I immediately realised that the woman had robbed me,” said G T, who called police.

The following day officers received a similar report from Indian M A, 23, who told them a woman in a niqab had repeatedly kissed him in the lift of a building in Bur Dubai and stole his wallet.

S S was arrested and charged with molesting the Indian and stealing Dh4,500 from him but was later acquitted.

On April 9, she appeared before the Dubai Criminal Court where she denied a charge of sexual assault and of theft, telling the court she was a “God-fearing Muslim woman who would never do such an act”.

However, the court found her guilty and jailed her for six months. She will be deported after completing her sentence.
