DUBAI // A wheelchair-bound woman who repeatedly beat and abused her housemaid for five months had her suspended three-month jail sentence upheld by the Appeals Court on Sunday.

At Dubai Criminal Court last November the Emirati woman, 60, was convicted of causing permanent injury to her maid’s wrist by twisting it repeatedly.

The Indonesian maid, 28, said: “She was angry with me all the time and she assaulted me many times until I managed to get a key to the locked door and escaped.

“I saw a man in the neighbourhood who noticed my injuries and asked me about them. I told him everything and he asked me to come to his house, then he called the police.”

A forensics examination found several injuries on the maid’s body.

Her employer repeatedly denied the charges. “I am in a wheelchair, how could I have assaulted her?” she said.

“I had a very bad experience with the maid but I never abused her.”
