DUBAI // A scorned lover who got drunk and set fire to his ex-girlfriend’s bed has been sentenced to a year in prison.

Indian waiter A R, 26, was found guilty on Sunday by Dubai Criminal Court of setting fire to an inhabited place, trespassing into a female-only residence, damaging the bedroom’s interior, damaging her belongings and endangering the life of another woman by setting fire to the room where she was sleeping.

The court acquitted him of trespassing into a women-only residence. No reasons were given by court.

His former girlfriend’s roommate, Filipina F K, 28, was asleep alone in the room when he went there.

Records show that the ex-girlfriend, K L, broke up with him shortly before the incident on October 16 last year.

He admitted to prosecutors that on that night he went out with another woman to a hotel, where they drank a lot of alcohol.

When he returned to his Jebel Ali accommodation, which is for employees of Fairmont The Palm hotel, he walked into the women’s room.

There, he took a pair of shoes belonging to her, placed them on the bed and set them on fire.

He will be deported after completing his jail term.
