DUBAI // A man has been arrested trying to sell Dh35 million worth of jewellery he is accused of buying with dud cheques.

Police say the man used his position as a driver for a VIP to con jewellers in Dubai.

They received a tip-off that he was visiting jewellery shops to purchase their most valuable pieces, and asking the shop owners to have the jewellery delivered to hotel rooms.

The man posed as the VIP’s authorised agent. He produced cards, papers, envelopes and seals bearing his employer’s name, and wrote dud cheques for the jewellery.

Dubai Police CID set up a special investigation team, who tracked the man to Oman, where he was visiting shops and offering the stolen jewellery for sale at below its true value.

He was arrested in cooperation with the police in Oman and all the stolen jewellery was recovered and identified by the shop owners in Dubai, police said.

Maj Gen Khamis Al Muzaina, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said the operation was the fruit of constant cooperation, coordination and exchange of information between the two countries.

The man, an Emirati, has been referred to Dubai public prosecution.
