Unemployed man threatened to blow up Dubai building in hopes of being deported

Kenyan admitted threats to police as he wanted to be deported back to his homeland, Dubai court hears.

DUBAI // A drunk and jobless man called Dubai Police and threatened to blow up the building where he lived if he was not deported back to his country, a Dubai court was told on Monday.

The 25-year-old Kenyan confessed to charges of issuing threats, consuming alcohol without a licence and to overstaying his visa. “Yes sir, I did that,” said the accused when he was confronted with the charges in court.

On April 17, prosecutors said the accused called the operations room at 5pm from his mobile phone and threatened to blow up the building in Naif.

“He said he would do so if we didn’t send him back to his country,” said an Emirati policeman, 28.

Police checked the mobile number and found it was registered under the defendant’s name and that he entered the country on October 18 last year and had been living illegally after he was terminated from his job as a security guard at a company in Dubai.

The man was arrested the same day near his home and was taken to Al Qusais Police Station, where he admitted making the call.

“He told us he was jobless and made the call so he could be prosecuted and deported,” added the policeman.

The defendant confessed to prosecutors and in court.

He awaits a verdict on June 13.
