The Public Works and Services Department in Umm Al Quwain is implementing an intensive campaign in cooperation with UAQ police to remove old and abandoned cars from in front of repair shops and on the streets, which reflect negatively on the city’s landscape.

The campaign was initiated due to the high number of cars without number plates that are not intended for sale, and parked in inappropriate locations. Old vehicles have been abandoned across UAQ and left in front of vehicle-repair workshops and on roadsides for months, with no effort by their owners to remove them.

The head of the public works department, Musabbah Humaid, said the department had already started posting removal notices on old and abandoned cars in various areas of the emirate, asking owners to remove the vehicles within 48 hours of the notice. In the event of non-compliance, they will be seized by the police.

Mr Humaid also called on the public to cooperate with the department to prevent the problem spreading.

He added that abandoned vehicles impede road cleaners’s work and induce the spread of waste. Some repair shops keep vehicles that were abandoned by owners who could not afford to pay for repairs made, workshop owners claimed.

Maj Obaid Ali Fadel, head of the city police station at UAQ Police, said a coordination meeting was held between Community Police and the Public Works and Services Department to discuss means of clearing plate-less old and abandoned cars from residential neighbourhoods and other areas.

Police patrols will determine the whereabouts of these vehicles, raise a status report to the department, contact the owner and take measures for their removal.
