DUBAI // A British former motorcycling champion has been cleared to return home after police closed their inquiry into his new wife’s death.
Sean Emmett, 43, has been in Dubai since his wife Abbie, 27, died during their honeymoon in February after falling from a hotel balcony.
Her death was initially deemed a suicide but the authorities reopened the case after suspecting she had been killed.
“We have closed the murder case as there was not enough evidence to suggest murder,” a public prosecution official said on Thursday.
Nine days after his wife’s death, Mr Emmett was arrested after turning up at a police station drunk.
He surrendered his passport and was fined Dh2,000 after being charged with consuming alcohol without a licence.
Mr Emmett took to Twitter to reveal the British embassy had received a letter from the prosection informing them the case had been closed.
He wrote that he was submitting a letter to the prosecution to try to speed up procedures and hoped to get his passport back in about two weeks.
“I feel like a pensioner! I’ve done enough sunbathing to last me a lifetime,” he tweeted.
