ABU DHABI // Research on security done by the interior ministry will be used by the UN to bolster measures for securing critical infrastructure and major events. On the sidelines of a conference in Abu Dhabi on "security measures during mass gatherings", the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (Unicri) invited the Ministry of Interior's Research and Security Studies Centre to be part of its network of institutes that provide research on securing critical infrastructure and major events.
Col Muhammad al Humaidi, the head of Abu Dhabi Police's officers training institute, said a proposal to integrate the ministry's security research centre into the Unicri's array of research institutes was already in place and would be referred to higher authorities for approval. He said the Unicri was ready to co-operate with the UAE thanks to its "expertise in employing technology to secure major events and because of the high-quality services provided to its police agencies".
The major events cover any occasions at which large crowds gather, such as a football match, concert or a political inauguration. The agreement will seek to enhance partnerships between the ministry's various law enforcement agencies and the private sector to improve security services and "boost innovation" in the field of security technologies to meet risks posted by the fast growth of cities.
