Tests to evaluate the readiness of the International Atomic Energy Agency and its member states in the event of a nuclear emergency took place on Sunday.
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) carried out the ConvEx exercise, which is split into three parts, including ConvEx-1, ConvEx-2 and ConvEx-3.
Last month, Fanr’s emergency response organisation took part in a ConvEx-2a exercise to assess its ability as the UAE’s nuclear regulator to complete the IAEA’s reporting forms and ensure information exchange.
Emergency response exercises are fundamental to a good emergency preparedness programme. Fanr would carry out its own independent assessment during a nuclear or radiological emergency and, based on this assessment, provide advice to the government on how to cope in such a situation.
