Three teams from the UAE and three from the USA have made it to the final of this year’s Drones for Good contest, to be held on Saturday.
The National Competition will see Smart Guidance System for the Blind, with their drone that helps blind people avoid obstacles, identify places and navigate from one place to another, up against the B Motion team with their Brain Controlled Electric Wheelchair, and RE-ACT ROBOT team with a haptic robotic system.
Battling it out for the top prize in the International Competition are MIT Biomimetics Robotics Lab team with their HERMES robots, the SuitX and UC Berkeley team which developed Affordable Exoskeletons for Children with Neurological Disorders, and the Andros Robotics team which came up with a Robotic Leg Advancement Device.
“The award has been successful in drawing participation from the region as well as from around the world, confirming the leading role of the UAE as an enabler in advanced technologies in various sectors and a global centre for innovation to serve humanity,” said Saif Al Aleeli, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation and Coordinator General of the Drones for Good award.
Launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the award is the largest of its kind, offering a total prize money of US$1 million for the International Competition winner, and Dh1 million for the National Competition winner.
The three-day event organised at Dubai Internet City from February 4 to 6, also serves as a platform for owners of innovative projects and various businesses to interact. It also features workshops to inspire innovating thinking among students.
The contest received 664 submissions from 121 countries around the world.

A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.
One of its main goals is to provide permanent treatment solutions for veterinary related diseases.
The taxidermy centre was established 12 years ago and is headed by Dr Ulrich Wernery.

Gough-Walters was born in Al Wasl Hospital in Dubai, raised in Sharjah, did not take up rugby seriously till she was 15, has a master’s in global governance and ethics, and once worked as an immigration officer at the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
