UAE sends more than 7,000 tonnes of aid to Libya

UAE's relief team in Libya has supplied everything from ambulances to school bags.

ABU DHABI // More than 7,000 tonnes of aid has been sent to Libya by the UAE in the past year, relief teams say.

Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz, the head of the UAE relief team in Libya, said shipments to the troubled country had included a wide variety of goods since the operation began in February.

"The UAE's aid to Libya consists of food stuff, ambulances, police uniforms, medical supplies," Mr Abdul Aziz told the state news agency Wam.

He said the operation started with an airlift that was launched after a directive by Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE.

The President ordered the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation to begin the shipment of aid on February 24.

Meanwhile, the UAE relief team recently handed out more than 5,000 school bags to children in Tripoli and several other Libyan cities.

The bags were also donated by the President's charity foundation.
