Ninety-nine per cent of residents know that it's dangerous to drive without a seat belt, according to a Ministry of Interior survey.

The ministry's 999 magazine polled 1,350 people for a driving safety report in its October issue, according to Wam, the state news agency.

Most of those surveyed said they also know it is dangerous to travel without proper child safety seats.

According to Wam, more than 20 per cent of those surveyed said they thought it was "highly likely" that they would be stopped if they drove with an unrestrained child - an equal number thought it was unlikely. About half reported that it was simply "likely."

Federal law requires passengers in the front seat of a vehicle to wear seat belts or face a Dh400 fine and four black points.
