UAE plan for Syria backed by global forum

Member states at the Inter-Parliamentary Union yesterday accepted an emergency item submitted by the UAE regarding the situation in Syria.

The proposal by a delegation from the Federal National Council was submitted after being merged with a number of motions from Egypt, France, the United Kingdom and Canada.

The 126th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) gathering this week in Kampala, Uganda, is a worldwide parliamentary dialogue forum.

The proposal focuses on stopping violence in Syria, human- rights violations and the secure passage of aid to the people, said Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, an FNC member at the meeting, according to the state news agency, Wam.

The motion urges IPU members to support UN, Arab League and GCC efforts to end Syria's bloodshed, plus a plan that adheres to international law and human rights laws by the IPU.

"The Federal National Council is pressing for the IPU to be involved in the events happening in Syria," said Dr Al Qubaisi. "This crisis is presenting a real test to the adherence of the international community to international and human-rights laws, which parliamentarians should hold above all."

Dr Al Qubaisi said UAE diplomacy played a large part in presenting this proposal, as UAE delegates met with Arab and Islamic delegates plus those from the UK, France and Canada.
