SHARJAH // Revamped roads, the first local elections in the country and new tourist attractions were among the highlights of the year in the emirate.

One of the major projects to come to fruition was the reconstruction of the King Faisal Road.

The Dh11.4 million project, which allowed easier connections for motorists travelling to the centre from the outer areas of the emirate, was widely applauded.

Citizens also hailed Sharjah Ruler, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi’s decree to hold an election for half of the seats on the Sharjah Consultative Council.

Another issue that made the news was when 400 car businesses closed their shops in the residential areas of Abu Shagara and Danig, moving to a Dh150 million site in Al Riqa Al Hamra, near Sharjah Airport.

Dr Sheikh Sultan approved a plan to relocate the car dealerships in 2013. The move came after residents of these area raised complaints about the noise and lack of parking due to dealerships using parking spots to display their cars.
