ABU DHABI // A mother beat her son with a bamboo stick causing severe injuries that required hospital treatment, the Appeals Court has heard.

The mother, an Emirati, said on the day of the incident her 14-year-old son returned home late and he was smoking. She said she beat him to discipline him and did not mean to hurt him.

Medical reports showed that her beatings exceeded the disciplinary level and caused deep injuries on his back and other areas on his body.

Her ex-husband, the father of the boy, reported her to police after the incident.

The mother was divorced from her husband and has had custody of their son for that past four years.

The case was adjourned until February 9.
