ABU DHABI // A local foundation has given the University of Texas a Dh550m grant to fund cancer research, the state news agency, WAM, has reported.
The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation said the $150m grant would establish the Zayed bin Sultan cancer treatment clinic at the university’s hospital, in addition to funding research based on genetic analysis and programmes dedicated to finding better treatments.
The 60,000 square metre medical facility will house an institute for cancer diagnosis and a pancreatic cancer centre.
The grant will also fund a number of annual fellowships, and three academic chairs – the Sheikh Zayed chair of oncology, the Sheikh Khalifa University chair of cancer knowledge and the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed chair of scientific and medical knowledge in cancer research.
John Mendelsohn, president of Anderson Cancer Centre at the University of Texas, said the Khalifa Foundation’s “generous grant” was the biggest in the university’s history.
