Islam is a religion of discipline and self-restraint is a virtue that all Muslims should partake in, the faithful will hear in the sermon on Friday.
One of the most important ways of showing self-restraint is the avoidance of anger.
The Prophet once asked his companions: “Whom among you do you consider a strong man?”
They replied: “The one who can defeat so-and-so in a wrestling contest.”
The Prophet said: “That is not so; a strong man is the one who can control himself when he is angry.”
In another hadith, the Prophet reiterated the advice to a companion, telling him not to get angry, several times.
Once a man approached the Messenger of Allah and asked: “Advise me.”
Then the Messenger of Allah said: “Do not be angry.”
The man repeated the same question and (the Prophet) again said: “Do not be angry,” and continued: “He is not strong and powerful who throws people down, but he is strong who withholds himself from anger.”
Other ways of showing self-restraint is by staying away from controversy. Muslims are expected to avoid lying and gossiping.
Everyone gets angry, including the Prophet, but whenever he got angry because of someone’s incorrect actions he expressed his displeasure calmly, using only mild words.
