ABU DHABI // Ramadan is a time for believers to forge deeper connections both with their religion and each other, mosque-goers will hear on Friday.
The imam will call on believers to dedicate themselves in prayer, good deeds and obedience during Ramadan as doing so allows them to be more devout in their relationship with God.
These acts in Ramadan are of particular importance as they weigh more according to the Messenger of Allah when he said: “When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened”.
Mosque-goers will hear how fasting goes beyond the act of abstaining from eating as it also asks that believers stay away from all that may invalidate fasting from the break of dawn until sunset, accompanied with a proper intention to fast.
Those fasting must also conduct themselves in a gracious and kind way. To make fasting easier, believers should take caution from temptations of food and lust.
The Prophet said: “If one of you is fasting, he should avoid obscene talk and raising his voice in anger, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, ‘I am fasting’.”
Mosque-goers will hear that upholding peace, maintaining a sense of humbleness and avoiding hurtful actions is just as important while fasting as refraining from food and water.
In the same regard, Jabir bin Abdullah, one of the Prophet’s companions, said: “When you are fasting, all your senses: ears, eyes and tongue must fast with you … and do not let your fasting day be like any normal day.”
However, Ramadan is also a time for forgiveness as the Prophet said: “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven.”
Furthermore, a fasting Muslim is also recommended to show diligence in reciting the Quran, as one of the first ayas in the Quran was revealed in Ramadan.
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” (Al-Baqara: 185)
Mosque-goers will hear that Ramadan is the time to be good to those less fortunate as empathy is key. Believers should put in effort towards doing good deeds in the form of zakat.

'The worst thing you can eat'
Trans fat is typically found in fried and baked goods, but you may be consuming more than you think.
Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:
Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.
Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.
Refrigerator dough - Products such as canned biscuits and cinnamon rolls often contain trans fat, as do frozen pizza crusts.
Creamer and margarine - Nondairy coffee creamer and stick margarines also may contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Key findings
- Over a period of seven years, a team of scientists analysed dietary data from 50,000 North American adults.
- Eating one or two meals a day was associated with a relative decrease in BMI, compared with three meals. Snacks count as a meal. Likewise, participants who ate more than three meals a day experienced an increase in BMI: the more meals a day, the greater the increase.
- People who ate breakfast experienced a relative decrease in their BMI compared with “breakfast-skippers”.
- Those who turned the eating day on its head to make breakfast the biggest meal of the day, did even better.
- But scrapping dinner altogether gave the best results. The study found that the BMI of subjects who had a long overnight fast (of 18 hours or more) decreased when compared even with those who had a medium overnight fast, of between 12 and 17 hours.

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.
