UAE Friday sermon: For good or evil, words are powerful

Speech can be a blessing and a danger, according to Islam, and the faithful should be mindful of what they say, mosque-goers will hear on Friday.

The imam will say that the importance of speech should be derived from the person who said it and its context. The influence of a scholar’s or teacher’s speech and its impact on people is one example, the faithful will be told.

However, the imam will also say that a parent in daily communication with family members is equally important and should be sure to choose the best and kindest words.

Worshippers will also hear about the dangers of words, because they can also be used for evil.

Allah, the Almighty, said: “And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] amongst them. Indeed. Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.” (Al-Israa: 53)

The imam will explain that, given that the effect of words can be both good and evil, believers should hold their tongue and reflect on whatever they say, as Prophet Mohammed said: “A true believer does not taunt or curse or abuse or talk indecently.”

Those who are mindful of their words have a special place in Paradise, according to Prophet Mohammed: “Indeed, in Paradise there are chambers, whose outside can be seen from their inside, and their inside can be seen from their outside.”

A Bedu asked: “Who are they for, O Messenger of Allah?”

The Prophet then said: “For those who speak well and feed others.”
