The faithful attending the congregational Eid prayer will learn all about the importance of the feast of sacrifice in Thursday’s Eid sermon.

The congregation will be reminded of the significance of Eid Al Adha in commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s unselfish act of sacrificing his son, Ismail, to Allah.

Eid is about strengthening the ties of friendship in the community and helping those who are in need. It is also a time of forgiveness, visitation and gift giving. People are urged to smile at each other and foster gestures of closeness.

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet Mohammed saying: “By Him in Whose Hand is my life! You will not enter heaven until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I inform you of something which, if you do, you will love one another? Promote greetings amongst yourselves.”

Muslims are also urged to let go of grievances and use this time to mend relationships and mark new beginnings.

According to Abu Ayyub Al Ansari, the Messenger of Allah also said: “It is not lawful for a Muslim to desert (stop talking to) his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning to the other way when they meet, the better of the two is one who is the first to greet the other.”
