DUBAI// Two men threatened to kill the police officers who were arresting them and burn down a police station, a court has heard.

Prosecutors said that early on the morning of May 31, the Emirati defendants, H A and R A, both 24, were spotted by police acting suspiciously near a cash machine in Al Mamzar.

Policeman K R, 37, said he thought they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“When we approached them, they refused to show any ID, assaulted us and insulted us with foul language,” K R said.

He added that H A threatened to kill himself if he was arrested.

“He said he would kill himself if he was detained at the police station, then he used some sharp tool and cut his own wrist,” said KR.

Records show that officers were unable to find the tool HA used to injure himself.

The two men were charged with issuing threatening to kill the policemen by setting them alight, threatening to burn down a police station, resisting arrest, and insulting the officers.

HA is charged with attempted suicide.

They did not enter a plea in court this morning.

A verdict is expected on November 17.
