SHARJAH // Police in Sharjah have arrested two people accused of running a prostitution ring and sorcery.
The man and woman, both Arabs, were arrested after an Arab girl they brought into the country escaped from a flat where she was being held and went to police.
She said she had been brought into the country with promises of a job at a salon, and when she arrived at the airport, the couple greeted her. It was only when they got to the apartment that she was told her new job was prostitution.
She said she was threatened to get her to comply. The couple told her she owed them Dh20,000 for her visa and air ticket, and that she had to take in as many clients as she could to repay the debt.
Police raided the flat and rescued other girls who the couple allegedly forced into prostitution. They also seized sorcery equipment.
The couple have been referred to prosecutors.
Police urged the public to report suspicious individuals in their communities and to distance themselves from sorcery and prostitution.
The police can be contacted by calling 999 or 065631111 or 800151.
