DUBAI // Two Asian men were arrested for dealing drugs after almost 5 kilograms of heroin was found in one of their backpacks.

Col Eid Hareb, director of the Dubai Police anti-narcotics department, said that a 28-year-old building worker was arrested at his room in a labour camp at a Dubai industrial area.

And a salesman, 36, was arrested near a mall in Abu Dhabi with the help of the capital’s police.

“The first suspect tried to escape when we raided his residence, while the second suspect also tried to escape and resisted arrest,” said Col Hareb. “We seized 572 capsules of heroin, weighing approximately 4.8kg, which were hidden in a backpack in plastic bags.

“The first suspect admitted to receiving the drugs from the second suspect with the aim of selling.”

Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, assistant commander of Dubai CID, said that their case had been forwarded to prosecutors to bring charges.

“The first suspect is accused of possession and intent to sell, and the second is charged with intent to sell and resisting arrest,” he said.

Col Hareb urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and contact them on the free hotline 800 400400 or email dpan@dubaipolice.gov.ae if they suspect anyone of being involved in drug crimes.
