DUBAI // Mini digital cameras worn on police officers’ bodies are being used in a six-month trial.
Dubai Police chief Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina said on Monday that the cameras were being considered but revealed on Tuesday that 80 devices are being used on the shoulders of public-facing patrol officers.
He said the goal was to gauge the extent to which officers were committed to providing first-rate policing services as well as to measure the level of transparency and neutrality in police-public interaction.
Maj Gen Al Mazeina said recordings will also provide greater credibility in the event of a complaint about or objection to traffic violations or any failure to provide policing to acceptable standards.
He added that the new cameras were high quality, easy to carry, lightweight and can record for up to eight hours.
At the end of a shift the data is transferred to an independent storing unit at Dubai Police Headquarters that cannot be not removed or tampered with.
