DUBAI // Regular visitors to Dubai International Airport hope next Tuesday's opening of Terminal 3 will put an end to traffic congestion, parking woes and long queues at check-in counters.
The roads to Terminal 1 are often gridlocked during the morning rush hour. The traffic can stretch as far back as Al Garhoud Bridge.
Austyn King, an Australian businessman, said the queue to enter the departures section between 6am and 9am was often between 30 and 45 minutes. But he added: "It's a great airport once you're in."
Other passengers described similar problems.
"I missed a flight to Qatar once," said Vikram Patel, "because I waited for more than an hour and a half to get through security screening and to reach the airline's desk to check in."
Norma Glick, a mother of three, said she avoided booking early morning flights when she travelled back to London because of the traffic.
"This is a great airport, but parking could be better as it's too hot here, and you have to walk a considerable distance from where you parked your car to the terminal," she said.
"I hope the parking at the new terminal will be better planned as I am always here, either travelling or receiving and sending family and friends."
She does, however, consider the airport "far better" than Heathrow in London, which is the world's busiest airport.
Zenda Sutherland, who was travelling to South Africa, agreed "the congestion is hectic and the queues are long".
"You have just got to arrive earlier," she said. "But it's not that bad, as it's moving."
Peter Clough, a tourist returning home to England, also believed the new terminal would improve things.
"You would expect there to be traffic congestion and long queues when you come to a busy airport," he said. "People should know this and not arrive late."

Mia Man’s tips for fermentation
- Start with a simple recipe such as yogurt or sauerkraut
- Keep your hands and kitchen tools clean. Sanitize knives, cutting boards, tongs and storage jars with boiling water before you start.
- Mold is bad: the colour pink is a sign of mold. If yogurt turns pink as it ferments, you need to discard it and start again. For kraut, if you remove the top leaves and see any sign of mold, you should discard the batch.
- Always use clean, closed, airtight lids and containers such as mason jars when fermenting yogurt and kraut. Keep the lid closed to prevent insects and contaminants from getting in.
