DUBAI // Toyota owners in the UAE are awaiting information about whether their vehicles will be recalled by the car maker to fix a fault in the driver’s power window switch.
The Japanese company has announced it would recall 6.5 million vehicles worldwide after it was found that the switch in some models could short circuit, causing it to overheat, melt and potentially lead to a fire.
“I’m worried about how long the repair work will take,” said Julian Bennet, who purchased a Toyota Sequoia a year ago.
“There are no accidents reported because of this, so that is a relief. That is what I have been checking to be doubly sure.”
The defect in the window switch is caused by insufficient grease applied to modules during manufacturing in some models produced between 2005 and 2010.
The models affected included the Yaris, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Sequoia and Rav4.
Toyota said it was not aware of any accidents caused by the defect.
The latest announcement came after a string of recalls last year. About 95,000 Toyota cars including Yaris, Camry and Rav4 were recalled in the UAE in April last year due to defects in the driver’s seat rail and steering column brackets that could cause the driver’s seat to fail to lock in position and air-bag failure in an accident.
That was part of a 6.4 million global recall.
In March last year, more than 800 Land Cruiser pick-ups and Avalon cars in the UAE were recalled after it was found that the brake hose bracket located on the front axle could break if vehicles fitted with diesel engines and ABS systems were driven on uneven roads for long periods.

Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.
