DUBAI // Car pooling and priority lanes for public buses and taxis were among the topics of discussion at a meeting between the Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Police.

Attended by Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s chairman of the board and executive director, and Maj Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazinah, commander in chief of Dubai Police, a key outcome of the meeting was agreement to trial car pooling on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road in an attempt to cut the number of cars.

Work is also on the way to create dedicated public bus and taxi lanes with the aim of improving the punctuality of public buses and ensuring faster access. The RTA was tasked with developing a system of offenses for private vehicles misusing the priority lanes. One way to keep track of offences would be through surveillance systems on board public buses.

The police and the RTA will also establish a work team in a bid to improve accident management. The new group will be headed by Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zafeen, assistant commander of the Dubai Police for Operation Affairs, with members including Engineer Maitha bin Udai, chief executive of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency.
