DUBAI // One person was killed and eight were injured in traffic incidents over the past few days in Dubai.
An Asian man was killed on Friday in a run-over incident on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road near a bridge towards Dubai.
“Despite the presence of metal barriers stopping people from crossing the road and the presence of a pedestrian bridge on the same road, the man decided to cross the highway from an undesignated area,” said Brig Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the Department of Traffic.
“The man sustained serious injuries and died on the spot after being run over by a driver, who was surprised to see him and going over 120 kph.
“Despite all the awareness campaigns that we continuously launch, especially targeting the labourers, we still see irresponsible people that put themselves and others in danger.”
On Saturday, a man sustained moderate injuries when his quad bike was involved in a crash with a vehicle in the Al Aweir area at around 10pm.
“We, again, urge people to abide by the traffic rules and avoid riding their quads in the middle of the roads as well as main roads,” said Brig Al Mazrouei. “Most of the accidents involving quad bikes are fatal, and we see an increase of riders when the weather starts to cool.
“It is very unfortunate, because most of the time the victims of such accidents are young men, whose ages range between 16 and 25.”
He also said that three people, whose injuries ranged between moderate to severe, were injured when their two vehicles collided on Friday. Also, on Sunday at around 10pm, two were injured when their cars crashed.
Brig Al Mazrouei also said that a bus caught fire on Al Khail Road on Thursday, but there were no injuries.
Meanwhile, as Asian man was severely injured on Friday when his vehicle fell in the Dubai Creek near the abras.
Maj Ali Al Naqbi, director of the Maritime Rescue Unit, said that Dubai Police received a call about the incident at around 6:30am.
“The man was already rescued by civilians when we arrived to the scene, but he has sustained serious injuries,” he said. “He was transported to Rashid Hospital, and rescue units entered the water to make sure there are no other victims.
“The vehicle was retrieved afterwards.”
On Tuesday, a tanker and a lorry collided on Emirates road on the Sharjah-bound Dubai Club Bridge.
Emergency workers had to use hydraulic equipment to rescue the driver of the tanker, who was then airlifted to Rashid Hospital.
