ABU DHABI // A motorist has been arrested after footage of him driving his car recklessly abroad was posted on social media.

The Emirati was taken into custody by police in the capital after officers saw the video of him performing dangerous stunts in a neighbouring Gulf country.

UAE law is applicable to Emiratis abroad. They can face prosecution if they break their home country’s law or the law of the nation they are visiting if they have not been charged at the location of the crime, according to the public prosecution.

Attorney General Ali Al Bulooshi called on all citizens to respect the laws of their host country and to represent the UAE honourably while abroad.

“The law is applicable to the few who do not abide by those rules and regulations,” he said.

“All UAE citizens driving abroad should behave as ambassadors for their country.”

A motorist from Abu Dhabi was prosecuted in October after performing a wheelspin in his car in a London street following a row with a cyclist.

Last week, Dubai Traffic Police seized a car that was involved in a video on social media that showed dangerous stunts.

Police have repeatedly warned drivers against performing stunts and posting videos online, as those who do so will face prosecution.

Members of the public can report dangerous driving on the non-emergency number 901 and on toll-free numbers 800 4353 and 800 7777.
