ABU DHABI // Surveillance systems will become active at an additional 36 intersections in the capital this week, bringing the total number to more than 100.

The new cameras, which detect speeding motorists and those who jump red lights, make up about 108 scattered across various junctions.

“The system represents one of the most important projects to improve traffic safety, which is based on six pillars known as the 6 Es - Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Emergency, Evaluation and Engagement,” said Brig Gen Hussein Al Harthi, the director of the traffic and patrols directorate at Abu Dhabi Police.

Each camera has been programmed to comply with the speed limit in whichever area it is placed and can detect traffic breaches across five lanes.

Using infrared technology, the cameras are able to take pictures without flashing and can also read license plates.

Gen Al Harthi asked drivers to refrain from speeding whenever they approach a traffic light that has turned amber and to maintain a safe speed at intersections.

Common breaches detected by the cameras include jumping red lights, sudden swerving, speeding, illegal u-turns and stopping on a pedestrian crossing.
