DUBAI // Pedestrian safety in Dubai will take a higher profile between now and 2017 as 10 more footbridges are built.

Bridges are being introduced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in black spot areas where a high number of “run-over’” accidents have occurred.

Two will be built on Baniyas Road, one on Khaled bin Al Waleed Road near Al Riffaa Al Saadiyaat Road, one near Al Tawar Centre and one on Al Ittihad Road.

Crossings are also being constructed on Arabian Ranches Road, Al Mankhool Road, Latifa bint Hamdan Road and near Al Khail Mall Road.

Improvement works will be made on Al Ain Road near Skycourts Buildings.

The RTA already has seven additional pedestrian bridges underway, at Baghdad Road (2), Al Maktoum Road, Al Mina Road, Amman Road, Baniyas Road and Al Rasheed Road.

That project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

The number of pedestrian bridges in Dubai has risen from 14 in 2006 and will be 120 when the extra 10 are finished by 2017.

“The bridges contributed to recording the lowest rate of pedestrian fatalities on Dubai roads in over 20 years,” said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director general.
