DUBAI // Lorries will be banned from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road by the end of the year.

They will instead be diverted to Emirates Road, said Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and chairman of the Federal Transport Authority.

In an interview with Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, Mr Al Nuaimi said the ministry is coordinating with authorities to implement the decision.

“We will start installing the boards and poles that alert lorries not to use Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and direct them to the alternative roads,” he said.

The step is part of the 2030 goal to bring road fatalities to zero. It is also aimed at reducing the amount of traffic on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
