ABU DHABI // A top policeman has hit out at the "intolerable" number of children who are driving cars illegally.

There were 341 cases of under age driving in Al Ain during the first half of this year, according to figures released by the Al Ain traffic police.
Officials attributed the high figures to parents who were not monitoring their children.
Col Hamad Al Baloushi, the head of traffic police for the external Abu Dhabi regions, stressed that the unavailability of an adult driver at home was not an excuse for parents to allow their children to drive under age. "This is unacceptable," he said. "Giving the keys to 15 or 16-year-olds and putting them in a position where they could hurt themselves and others is absolutely intolerable."
Drivers who fail to present a licence when requested by the police are subject to a Dh200 fine. However, Col Al Baloushi said that if the driver is below the legal driving age of 18, both the driver and his or her parents can be charged.
Should under age driving result in an accident, the individuals involved could remain in police custody for 48 hours.
Col Al Baloushi said most under age drivers were from Al Ain, where, according to 2009 figures from the Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi, about 30 per cent of the population was under 19.
Last month, under age driving ended tragically when a 16-year-old Emirati girl took her two younger sisters, aged 12 and 13, for a ride near the Al Wathba bridge. Officials said the car was speeding, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and swerve into a metal barrier. The two young sisters died while the driver survived.

According to additional figures from the Al Ain traffic police, seven of 45 road fatalities in the past six months have involved children between the ages of two and 17. This was a 30 per cent decrease from last year.
Al Ain recorded 258 traffic accidents, of which 41 were caused by drivers swerving out of their lanes, 33 caused by tailgating and 27 by negligence.
The youngest victim of a road accident was a two-year-old who was run over by a car in Al Samra.
Officials said the Al Ain traffic department was also working with the municipality to install speed bumps in busy pedestrian areas.

Another way to earn air miles
In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.
An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.
“If you use your HSBC credit card when shopping at our partners, you are able to earn Air Miles twice which will mean you can get that flight reward faster and for less spend,” says Paul Lacey, the managing director for Europe, Middle East and India for Aimia, which owns and operates Air Miles Middle East.

There has been a longstanding need from the Indian community to have a religious premises where they can practise their beliefs. Currently there is a very, very small temple in Bur Dubai and the community has outgrown this. So this will be a major temple and open to all denominations and a place should reflect India’s diversity.
It fits so well into the UAE’s own commitment to tolerance and pluralism and coming in the year of tolerance gives it that extra dimension.
What we will see on April 20 is the foundation ceremony and we expect a pretty broad cross section of the Indian community to be present, both from the UAE and abroad. The Hindu group that is building the temple will have their holiest leader attending – and we expect very senior representation from the leadership of the UAE.
When the designs were taken to the leadership, there were two clear options. There was a New Jersey model with a rectangular structure with the temple recessed inside so it was not too visible from the outside and another was the Neasden temple in London with the spires in its classical shape. And they said: look we said we wanted a temple so it should look like a temple. So this should be a classical style temple in all its glory.
It is beautifully located - 30 minutes outside of Abu Dhabi and barely 45 minutes to Dubai so it serves the needs of both communities.
This is going to be the big temple where I expect people to come from across the country at major festivals and occasions.
It is hugely important – it will take a couple of years to complete given the scale. It is going to be remarkable and will contribute something not just to the landscape in terms of visual architecture but also to the ethos. Here will be a real representation of UAE’s pluralism.

Moment of the day When Dilruwan Perera dismissed Yasir Shah to end Pakistan’s limp resistance, the Sri Lankans charged around the field with the fevered delirium of a side not used to winning. Trouble was, they had not. The delivery was deemed a no ball. Sri Lanka had a nervy wait, but it was merely a stay of execution for the beleaguered hosts.
Stat of the day – 5 Pakistan have lost all 10 wickets on the fifth day of a Test five times since the start of 2016. It is an alarming departure for a side who had apparently erased regular collapses from their resume. “The only thing I can say, it’s not a mitigating excuse at all, but that’s a young batting line up, obviously trying to find their way,” said Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach.
The verdict Test matches in the UAE are known for speeding up on the last two days, but this was extreme. The first two innings of this Test took 11 sessions to complete. The remaining two were done in less than four. The nature of Pakistan’s capitulation at the end showed just how difficult the transition is going to be in the post Misbah-ul-Haq era.

When is the best time to start saving in a pension? The answer is simple – at the earliest possible moment.
