Five people were killed – including two children – and 14 were injured in two road accidents on Saturday.
Four died and seven were hurt after a driver lost control of his vehicle on Masafi Road, Ras Al Khaimah. Expatriate K A swerved into the path of an oncoming vehicle, police said, leading to his death. Two children, aged 10 and 12, also died at the scene.
A fourth victim, a 49-year-old woman, died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
In the second accident, an Iranian man died and seven others were injured after two cars collided on Al Mulaiha Road, Sharjah.
Among those hurt were an Emirati man and three of his children, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.
The injured were taken to Al Dhaid Hospital. The Iranian man was taken by helicopter to Al Qassimi Hospital but died from his injuries.
The Emirati family received minor injuries and are in good condition, Al Ittihad reported. The other victims continue to receive treatment.
Figures from the Ministry of Interior showed there was one less road death in the first eight months of the year compared with the same period last year.
There were 463 road fatalities in the country up to the end of August, with sudden swerving the leading factor – responsible for 113 of the deaths.
