An Etihad Airways cargo flight from Abu Dhabi to Kenya has been forced to divert to Oman due to a "technical issue".

The Boeing 777 aircraft to Nairobi changed course a little over an hour into its scheduled five hour, 15 minute flight time.

The plane - flight EY0949 - left Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, according to flightradar24, an online flight tracking service.

It reached a cruising altitude of 40,000ft and a speed of more than 450 knots before being diverted to Salalah in southern Oman while flying across the Gulf of Aden.

"Etihad Cargo flight EY0949 from Abu Dhabi to Nairobi has diverted to Salalah due to a technical issue," a statement from the airline said.

"The aircraft landed safely and is undergoing a full technical check in Salalah. Safety is Etihad’s number one priority."
