SHARJAH // Eight people have died in run-over accidents in Sharjah so far this year, police said.
The number is a decrease compared to the same period last year, when there were 17 deaths.
Sharjah Police has said fatalities have decreased 77 per cent at hot-spot roads in the emirate, including Sharjah Ring Road, Emirates Road, Maliha, Al Dhaid-Sharjah and Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
According to police, fatalities fell by 53 per cent.
Lt Col Ahmad Saeed Al Naour, the acting director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, said awareness campaigns for motorists and pedestrians contributed significantly in the decline.
“We have carried out awareness campaigns and seminars in schools, universities and youth centres. Safety on the roads is a shared responsibility between pedestrians, motorists and traffic police,” he said.
He said all members of the community should be aware of the dangers on the road and abide with traffic laws and regulations to limit human and financial loses.
