Eleven people died and 84 were injured in 38 traffic accidents that took place over the long Eid Al Adha weekend.

The accidents, which occurred between September 23 and 26 all over the country, were a result of people being lax about traffic rules and regulations, said Brig Gen Ghaith Al Zaabi, director general of traffic coordination at the Ministry of Interior.

In Ras Al Khaimah, 403 minor traffic accidents were recorded over the same period, with 209 traffic fines being handed out.

Of the above collisions, three resulted in five people receiving treatment at hospital.

In addition, six fires were reported in the emirate over Eid, none of which led to anyone being injured.

In Dubai, more than 20 people were injured in vehicle crashes in Dubai during Eid Al Adha.

More than 20,000 calls were made to Dubai police over the break. A total of 462 traffic accidents – the result of speeding, tailgating and general negligence – were also registered within the same period.

Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic, said there were no fatalities this year, adding Dubai Police recorded 20 serious incidents from September 24 until September 26.

Of the 22 injuries, one person was in serious condition, six were moderately injured and 15 were minor cases.

Last year, two people were killed and 25 were injured during Eid Al Adha.

Brig Al Zaabi urged motorists to observe traffic laws, especially concerning the distance between vehicles and parking in designated places. He also called on motorists to refrain from speeding and avoid using mobile phones while driving.
