Dubai Metro route closed for more than a year back on track next week

A section of Metro line closed for more than a year as part of a track extension project for Expo 2020 Dubai will reopen next week.

The route between Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (formerly Jumeirah Lakes Towers) Metro Station and Ibn Battuta Metro Station was taken off schedule on January 5 last year due to the Route 2020 scheme, which included a new metro station being built to create travel links to the world fair site.

Passengers have since had to use a shuttle bus service to travel between the two stations.

But now Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has given the green light for the section of line to open again on Friday, April 19.

However, Nakheel Harbour and Tower station - between DMCC and Ibn Battuta stations - and the attached multi-storey car park remain closed while the network extension continues.

"RTA makes every effort to ensure the smooth running of public transit services constantly and seamlessly," said Mohammed Yousef Al Mudharreb, director of rail operations at RTA’s Rail Agency.

"RTA was keen to provide free shuttle buses between DMCC and Ibn Battuta Stations throughout the closure of the two metro stations to ensure the smooth mobility of riders and not inconvenience them with construction works underway between the two stations."
