An imaginative drive has been launched to add a splash of colour to parking spots across Dubai.
Six artists gave a creative makeover to 100 parking meters in Jumeirah, Dubai Media City and Al Mustaqbal Street as part of a campaign by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the government, and the Roads and Transport Authority.
Motorists can now enjoy a scenic route to paying for their parking thanks to the 15 dazzling designs on show, celebrating the themes of diversity and tolerance.
The project was part of the wider #DubaiSpeaksToYou initiative, which aims to transform the city into an urban canvas for art and creativity.
“The project is also part of our efforts to use art to forge a positive identity for various neighbourhoods in our city,” said Shaima Al Suwaidi, Brand Dubai city branding manager.
“We believe such projects can play an instrumental role in inspiring innovation and broadening people’s perspectives, while also attracting new visitors and investment into our city.
“We seek to create unique artistic experiences that make public spaces in Dubai more vibrant and engaging.”
Some of the meters were painted with images of Russian dolls, while others were designed to appear like ice-cream and hand-held video game consoles.
“Through this project we seek to artistically transform parking spaces so that the public can engage with these areas in new meaningful ways,” said Rowdah Al Mehrizi, RTA director of marketing and corporate communications.
The project manager of the scheme said the artwork featured motifs and icons that highlighted Dubai’s multicultural character, as well as its identity and values.
“We have brought together a group of Emirati and expatriate artists to create a series of art experiences that will highlight Dubai’s vision for an inclusive society,” said Fatma Al Mulla.
“The experiences have been curated to transport residents and visitors from everyday life into the realm of imagination and beauty.”
