If you are a UAE driver, getting to know the traffic rules and regulations could save you a lot of money - as well as your licence.

Rack up 24 black points for common misdemeanors such as not renewing your registration plates or parking fines and you will be banned from driving for a year, and could also incur a hefty fine or have your vehicle impounded.

The most common fines come from speeding, while using a mobile phone and driving is a frequently reported violation that risks a Dh800 fine and four black points.

Rubbernecking, or blocking traffic flow at the scene of an accident is also an offence that carries a big penalty.

It's also worth remembering that under new regulations introduced last year, passengers failing to wear a seatbelt could cost the driver Dh400 and four black points.
