A Dubai resident described “chaotic” scenes on Wednesday night at a metro station as problems with the station doors prevented commuters from boarding.

Emma Claire, who lives in the Marina, said she used the metro to get to work in Media City during the cooler winter months.

But on Wednesday, at about 6pm, she was forced to walk for 20 minutes on her way home due to problems with the station doors.

“I went to the Nakheel Metro Station to get the metro home after work, but the doors of the station were not opening,” she said. “Nobody had any idea about what was going on but everybody started piling up outside.”

She said a member of staff tried to get the doors open, but to no avail. “They eventually opened but it took a while,” she said. “And even then, the train was stuck and another one came in, at which point people were almost getting stuck in the doors. It was so chaotic.”

Ms Claire left the station to get a taxi but none were available. “There were no cabs because of rush hour so I decided to go back up after I was told the train was working again.

“Once back up, we were told the train was terminating here so it didn’t seem like we were going to go anywhere. It took so long. I just wanted to get home.”

The Roads and Transport Authority, which operates the metro, could not be reached for comment.
